Nokia e61 vs Nokia e61i - Part 2

Friday, June 15th, 2007

Okay here is the second part I will slowly and in detail cover the goodies inside THE Nokia e61i. We have to keep enticing people to buy this phone or have spoilers for those who don’t.

The Active Standby Screen!

active satndby 2

The active standby screen is a one glance of what your phone is doing whether it be a missed call, unread sms message, push mail/pop mail, calender, to do items and of course the WLAN wizard. This feature makes it easy to know whats going on. Of course if you are listening to music your track being played is shown. The best part in the active standby screen is it can be completely configured to suit your needs.

My Nokia e61i fell today

Thursday, June 14th, 2007

The best part about blogging is that you can express your feelings with like minded people. After having a terrible meeting my e61i fell badly today face down from my colleagues desk. Guess what nothing happened to it until…yes here comes the annoying part…later I discovered that the silver back cover is moving slightly. Please symphatize with me and tell me the back cover is slightly moving in yours as well. Make me feel better.

Nokia e61i vs Nokia e61 Verdict!

Friday, June 8th, 2007

e61.jpgNokia e61i

After using the Nokia e61i for a month I thought I wil give you a hands on experience to clear other users apprehensions to upgrade or not. I will comment only on noticeable differences not indulge in complete detailed hardware and software specs. Physical differences (Part 1)

Design

Nokia e61i design wise is much more superior to e61 with its silver and mocha combination. Compared to the e61 with its joypad and all silver plastic material this one looks more beautiful and sleeker in this color combo. The all silver D PAD with silver smooth rim like edges enhances the design value and somehow makes it look more sleeker. My uncle was holding it next to his ear and for the 1st time I saw another view as I had not seen anyone holding it except for me. Obviously I cannot see how it looks in that view. The silver and mocha combo with the silver edges around the camera eye really made me feel like a proud owner. The phone from the side looks slimmer due to the fact that the black part gives an illusion of one looking only at the silver edges

Key Pad

Key Pad is much more responsive, better spaced and raised perfectly. Text input has become much faster though I have to keep cuttings my nails every week instead of 2 weeks.

D Pad

It takes a couple of hours to get used to it. But trust me when I say it is a vast improvement in navigation then the joy pad. I am a heavy user of the phone to the extent that I do not open my laptops at times. The joypad used to make my thumb ache after a while thosedays are gone now the D PAD make the navigation experience much smoother and no more thumb aches. Thank you Nokia.

Additional Buttons

Additional button that is own key and contacts are fine but they do not add much value to the operation to the phone in my opinion. Again the symmetry and the alignment of the buttons next to the D PAD makes the area much more complete and finished. So design wise their is a definite improvement in that area.

Alert Sensor The alert sensor in the Nokia e61i keeps blinking as you can manage its settings to blink for a set period of time. Now you can hardly ever miss an email, sms or call.

Power On Button

Is now in white with an orange circle which makes it more defined and blends in with the phone yet stands out.

Embossed

The addition of embossed e61i makes Nokia the logo complete.

Camera

After using e61 for 1 whole year (longest I have ever had a phone) I keep forgetting that the Nokia e61i has a camera but when I do remember it gives me an additional satisfaction. I have taken a few pictures and videos which I will add later and I must add they are not bad at all.

Sound Speaker

Sound speaker seems much better and the various tones sound more melodious then the Nokia e61

Physical Verdict: 7/10%

Improvement: 70%

Will cover noticeable difference in software in part 2

So what’s new in e61i?

TEXT TO SPEECH

In tools folder the most talked about application Text to Speech is a fun application.
Basically you can choose between Ed or Ellens voice which is by default in UK English. Once you select the voice you like you can increase/decrease their volume and speed with which they read or talk back to you. Depending on the language or pronunciation you can also download various voice overs from the catalog. I chose Sangeeta which was in English Indian as I am used to hearing that accent. Once you have the setting configured you can go to office folder and click on message reader. Message reader shows your last sms received with a play button. When you hit play the voice that you selected starts reading your last sms message, mind you email cannot be payed. It is pretty funny to listen to and we got a real kick out of trying different voices. I really dont understand the purpose behind it other then the visually impaired (no pun intended) but the text font are pretty big these days.

MY OWN KEY

The circular like key that you see next to the message icon is my own key. You can set it to launch any application you want. I have configured it to launch Anthony’s famous screenshot software.More new review to follow….check back soon!

Browser Problem Continue

Sunday, May 6th, 2007

Hi used the web browser a lot today was browsing flicker. Went out of memory a couple of times and the browser just shut down. I know that flicker is heavy on java but still these problem should have been eliminated by now. It still seems they are on beta and a new firmware will be announced in not so distance future. A bit depressing considering they should have learnt from the e61 days. E61 on the other hand after the last firmware update became pretty much zero with problems. Will I go back to e61 as it is still in my drawer? Probably not their is enough juice in this one. I know I have been commenting on the cons rather then the pros. Will do a pro review by tomorrow.

e61i losing its virginity

Saturday, May 5th, 2007
Here you can see the e61i losing its virginity. After numerous calls and tracking the package which took most of my day. The phone finally arried at 4:00 pm local time. The box was all crumbled up that was a bit upsetting but inside is what matters the most and everything was intact. I had a hard time getting the plastic off was so excited like a little kid but finally my wife came to the rescue. It was like a couple of kids opening up their christmas present.

Here are a couple of screenshots unboxing. You may have seen a lot of images these are not so sophisticated so mind the camera and fuziness. Taken from Samsung!

Finally got it!

Saturday, May 5th, 2007

Yes baby! Finally got it. It is unbelievable. The color scheme black and silver is too sexy. The phone looks cool, elegant and much more business like as compared to e61. D pad is too cool and easy to use…my thumb does not hurt anymore. The keys are well spaced and much softer. The platform is much more responsive and the browser seems faster they are many goodies as well which I will revie later. The camera is not that bad though havent played with it much. And by the way I got a 256 mb card for FREE! (thought they did not give one) Will do a detailed review later.
